Background
Students for a Sustainable Stanford was formed in the Spring of 2000
to encourage green building on campus and to reduce
Stanford's greenhouse gas emissions. Since then we have grown and
evolved into one of the most prominent environmental-focused student groups
on campus and have extended our work to all kinds of issues, from local topics
like water and food to international problems like climate
change.

Looking Forward
What we are committed to:
Real Food System
We are currently working with Stanford Dining and the Campus Garden
initiative on assessing baseline information and structure to work
towards a "real" food system here at Stanford. Expanding on-campus food production, changing purchasing practices, and educating the student body about the impact of what we eat-- these are all part of the initiative!
University Infrastructure
SSS is actively engaging with different departments at Stanford to
reassess and redesign current practices. We aim to develop a more sustainable
infrastructure in the fields of: Waste, Energy & Atmosphere, Green
Building, Green Purchasing and Food, Information Technology,
Transportation, Water, Community Relations.
Climate Bill
We live in a warming world. As a lead research institution and a huge resource consumer in Northern California, Stanford University needs to make a commitment to reduce its carbon and environmental impact, and efficiently utilize its available resources. Our subgroup, the "Climateers" has and continues to engage with the University administration and the ASSU to urge a commitment to a climate plan with student collaboration.
Our competitor institutions have made commitments to this cause and
SSS is dedicated to playing a role in a diligent and just plan
along with the awareness of such.
Campaigning
SSS in recent years has grown to be recognized as one of the most
active sustainability-oriented student groups on campus. Since "sustainability" is not just about lightbulbs and Priuses, we partner with a broad range of social-issue groups. We have partnered with over 10 student groups, and we continue to grow.
