Projects
These are some of the upcoming campaigns SSS will be focusing
on.
Campus Garden Initiative
Working on the
expansion of the Stanford Community Garden to an actual Stanford
Farm that will incorporate interdepartmental collaboration to
bring a new-age, high yield, organic farm to the Stanford Campus
and food system
Green Dorm Project
The Stanford Green Dorm project has served as a tremendous opportunity in the past for undergrads and grads to be actively involved in the
development of Stanford's first sustainable dorm on campus. In recent times, the University has taken funding from it's construction and SSS is committed to bringing
student awareness as a factor into restoring this
project.
Sustaining East Palo Alto The Stanford and EPA community have the opportunity to truly benefit from a long-term committed relationship that incorporates multi
departmental research, education, and focused volunteer efforts that will make East Palo Alto an "extended campus" of Stanford and will allow for both stakeholders to
engage in a effort to form a sustainable, new-age community. SSS will work with the new Stanford Environmental Justice Group and the Majora Carter Group to create
the structure for this long term agenda.
Subgroups
SSS divides into subgroups to focus on projects and areas of
advocacy.
Climateers
Climateers is the subgroup of SSS devoted to increasing awareness and campus activism surrounding a broad range of issues relating to climate change. We also work closely with Stanford's Department of Sustainability and Energy Management to promote the student voice at an administrative and institutional level. We're excited for what will be a great year of climate action, and invite any interested members of the Stanford community to come check us out at SSS meetings!
Food and Agriculture
The Food and Agriculture subgroup seeks to promote food sustainability education among students, boost the consumption of local, healthy, organic foods on the Row and in dining halls, and support garden and farm initiatives on campus. By working with Dining and the Stanford administration, planning food-education events and garden work parties with students, and working with houses' kitchen managers, we can make Stanford exemplary for its wise food choices and commitment to supporting the Bay Area community.
Group R
Group R is all about resource awareness. The group works to improve the reducing, reusing, and recycling practices of Stanford University. The group is currently working on waste audits, composting in the residences, and campus-wide paper use/purchasing practices. Group members are welcome to initiate their own projects as well.
Water
The water group helps Stanford conserve water. Along these lines, we are trying to set up rain catchment systems to feed water into some of Stanford's gardens. The water group also educates students about California's water crisis. We will put together a panel this year discussing the legal, economic, and scientific aspects of our state's water scarcity and water quality issues.
