Energy Bowl 2007 // projects / energybowl / 2007 2007 Website 2007 Early Standings This was the second year that SSS organized the Energy Bowl and Water Derby. Here’s what Emma Yuen, project manager, did to make it a reality: “This competition is easy to put on, thanks to the support we receive from Student Housing, especially from Larry Hoffman, who is the Energy Management and Building Renewal Program Coordinator. This also saves a considerable amount of money by conserving energy and water in the competition. This money is used to publicize the competition and make prizes. Most of the tasks to run this competition are small and can be taken on by many people. 1. Meet with Energy Coordinator and go over the scope of the competition (all houses, or all dorms), the time frame when the competition will start, and the amount of money that we have to run the competition. Also, this meeting should decide what prizes the winning dorms and houses receive. In the past, the prizes have been an “energy saving technology for the residence” (like low-flow toilets) and mugs or t-shirts. 2. Publicize: Make a logo, theme and paper flyer, and e-flyer. Also, get a flyer about ways to conserve water and energy. Some past e-flyers can be seen here: Energy and Water Conservation Tips, Word Document with Tips, Continuing Energy Bowl ad (pdf), and the Energy Bowl Flyer. Make a website about the competition. Get an article published in the daily about the competition, and an ad in the Daily. Meet with the SOC’s – Student Outreach Coordinators at the Haas center (Amanda Crowell currently organizes them, contact her at akc@stanford.edu) and give them the flyers to give to their dorm. Organize sustainability members to go to house meetings and tell each dorm about the competition and pass out more flyers and conservation flyers. Post to eadvertising. Post it on Stanford Events. Put it on the digital screens on campus. Send eflyers out to as many dorms as possible, make sure RAs know about it to tell their residents, send eflyer to e-reps list, service4all@lists.stanford.edu, and sustainability list. Have Student Housing send an e-flyer to every student on campus. 3. After the competition starts, and the midway standings are in, get another article in the Daily, make an eflyer about the mid-competition standings, post results on website, and perhaps have something in White Plaza that shows the mid-way standings. Do many of the “publicity” things in step #2. 4. After the competition ends, coordinate the prizes for the winning residence, and post the end results on the website, as well as have an article for the Daily about the winners and what they will receive. Make sure you quantify the results and show how much people have saved in this competition in kWh, gallons, and money saved. Thank all who have helped with this competition. This year, we got 100% organic cotton American Apparel tshirts, from Splendor Designs, which is a San Francisco-based silk screening company.
VGKids also was another vendor.
5. Try to spread knowledge about the success of this competition to other schools. |
