Recycling bins in
graduate housing
// projects / recycling bins
Hammad emailed some administrators. This project is on hold. Low priority because of nature of grad housing. Here are those conversations:
Hi Hammad,
We were hoping that we would receive one-time funding from R&DE in our budget for next year so that we could begin the program. We received this a couple of years ago in the undergraduate budget which allowed us to provide bins throughout undergraduate housing. Unfortunately, we did not received any funding in the upcoming '07 budget. We will continue to request the funding in our annual budget request cycle.
What we are thinking of doing, is expanding the program to Crothers/CroMem since it is a very similar space to undergraduate dormitories. This will probably happen next September. Our last option at this time is to sell the bins on our Cardinal Mall website. I don't believe we have started this yet, but it will probably become another item that is available to students to purchase.Julie is correct in saying that trash bins are not provided in grad housing, so we have thought the students would provide a recycling space along with their trash container.
If there is any funding that Sustainable Stanford has, we would certainly like to discuss how we could use this towards providing recycling bins to graduate residences.
Sincerely,
Imogen Hinds

Subject: RE: Recycling Bins in Grad Housing?
thanks for emailing and I am glad you are interested. Student Housing, and specifically Imogen Hinds gets the credit for getting the funding to place the recycling bins in the undergraduate rooms. Although we do not have any tonnage data, I think the bins have been well received. We did do a survey last June and we received very positive comments about the bins.
As for placing them in graduate housing, there are two issues that I can see. One is funding. Second, I was told that housing does not provide trash cans in graduate housing so they do not necessarily have to provide a recycling bin. If a student has to buy themselves a trash can, they can also buy themselves a recycling bin (because any bin can be a recycling bin, just label it).
None the less, if you want to have recycling bins in the graduate residence halls, you need to let housing know that it is important to you. The people you need to contact are either your housing supervisor and/or Imogen Hinds - Director of Operations for Housing.
Good luck!
