Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion

Learning how to cultivate a professional culture of respect and well-being that engages with the many perspectives and lived experiences that make up our community, is an important part in one's professional and career development.
Objectives
- Understanding the varying educational pathways to academia and the importance of recruitment
- Engage with many communities at Stanford and in the field to develop an inter-cultural competency
- Practice an inclusive mindset and approach to what we do as educators (mentorship, teaching, etc).
Suggested framework
Education
- Familiarize yourself with our values and practices and attend the Respectful Workplace Community training
- Complete readings from the Community Library
- Take PWR 194NCR or EDUC 389C
- Attend VPGE Diversity Works workshops
- Participate in the Haas Center Graduate Student program Research as Praxis
- Participate in our community initiatives (Coffee Conversations, Inclusive Mentorship workshops, book club, etc.)
- Participate in relevant offerings focused on teaching and mentoring within SDSS (Pro-Seminars, workshops, etc) or across the University
Experience
- Become a mentor with SESUR, SURGE, MUIR, SUPER, or Young Investigators
- Serve in a student leadership role (Diversity, Equity and Inclusion liaison or Recruitment Ambassador)
- Participate in Diversity-focused initiatives (Diversity, Equity & Inclusion advisory committee, URGE pod, JEDI programs, Environmental Justice Working Group, etc.)
- Participate in the IDEAL Pedagogy Program
- Complete a Cardinal Service program
- Participate in a community-based action project such as the Bay Area Science Festival
- Participate in ally-ship organizations
- Create a culturally responsive program, training, or lesson plan
- Apply for VPGE DIF funds
Portfolio Piece
- Prepare an inclusive scientific leadership statement
- Update your CV to reflect your activities and experiences
- Develop a part of your e-portfolio or professional website to showcase your recruitment or community activities
- Write a Reflection, Summary, or Case Study of your specific experience
