The odds that nations will meet a key climate goal set out in the 2015 Paris Agreement are rapidly decreasing, according to an assessment of carbon-dioxide emissions.

If the current rate of greenhouse-gas emissions continues, there’s a 50% chance the world will breach the 1.5C warming threshold in just nine years, according to the Global Carbon Budget annual report. CO2 releases are estimated to climb 1% this year to a record, surpassing pre-pandemic levels.
