The Office of Access, Belonging & Community at the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability advances recruitment and retention initiatives, as well as an inclusive and respectful community culture, to attract and foster talent who are committed to addressing today’s sustainability challenges.
Letter from the Assistant Dean
Welcome to our Access, Belonging & Community web pages. You’ll find resources for faculty and staff, current students, prospective students, and postdocs. You can find materials for best practices in our community resources library. There are various avenues through which you can participate, including mentoring undergraduate researcher, joining the recruitment ambassadors program, attending our Partners in Belonging events, giving feedback, reporting community issues, and finding support for your academic professional development. For prospective students, we invite you to check out helpful resources on our admissions page.
Our Community Goals
Our office helps create access to educational pathways in the field of Sustainability and cultivates an academic environment that embraces many different perspectives. The Access, Belonging & Community office runs the NSF Sustainability Undergraduate Research in Geoscience and Engineering (SURGE) program, Dean’s Graduate Scholars and Dean’s Postdoctoral Fellowship programs, and also organizes workshops and community gatherings. We host informal “Coffee Convos” open to the entire Doerr School community to highlight the work of our many student groups that help create a sense of belonging and well-being at Stanford.
By understanding and celebrating the various experiences and pathways to academia, we can build a more welcoming educational and scientific environment for everyone.
Our Three North Stars
Building on the work created by our Respectful & Inclusive Workshop program (2006) and the Office of Multicultural Affairs (2010) established by Professor Emeritus Dr. Jerry Harris, the Office of Access, Belonging & Community is committed to expanding our outreach and recruitment to today’s broad talent pool, while also enhancing the academic and educational student experience. Our programs are guided by our three north stars:
ACCESS – Planting pathways and opportunities in the field of Sustainability
BELONGING – Cultivating our talent while nurturing a strong sense of belonging
COMMUNITY – Growing a flourishing SDSS culture by embracing our rich tapestry of perspectives and backgrounds
Dr. Lupe Carrillo
Assistant Dean for Access, Belonging & Community
