Sustainable Societies Institute
The school is working toward the launch of a new institute with a mission to accelerate the world’s transition to more sustainable and fair societies through partner-engaged research that informs and propels large-scale change.
Our progress
Stanford has a history of fostering interdisciplinary collaboration through institutes that support teams of researchers focused on challenges that span disciplines. For more than a decade, the Woods Institute for the Environment and the Precourt Institute for Energy have inspired collaborations in energy and the environment and engaged with external partners locally and globally. Woods and Precourt are now part of the Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability.
The launch of a third institute focused on sustainable societies has been a part of the vision for the school since its founding. Starting in the spring of 2023, faculty and scholars from across Stanford’s seven schools came together to develop a vision for the Sustainable Societies Institute, or SSI.
The school is now building on that vision to create SSI as a powerful complement and partner to the school’s existing institutes and its Sustainability Accelerator, with a focus on “how” – how do we enable, catalyze, and achieve sustainable societies?
