Thousands of global leaders, diplomats, scientists, and activists gathered in Egypt for the 27th UN climate Change Conference of Parties (known informally as COP27), the world's largest annual gathering on climate action. A delegation of Stanford faculty, staff, and students participated in COP27 as unofficial observers, volunteers, and speakers, sharing their expertise on topics ranging from adaptation to wildfires and public health to the role of blue foods in the global food chain.
Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability at COP27
COP27 emphasized food systems and emissions amidst a global food crisis and ongoing deforestation related to agriculture. In response, Stanford joined with Cornell University and Princeton to organize an official side event highlighting the role cutting-edge research and solutions can play in decarbonizing the food and agricultural systems.
Inaugural Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability Dean Arun Majumdar spoke on the role of universities in bringing solutions to scale, later joining Stanford climate scientist Chris Field, director of the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, and Research Scholar Bodie Cabiyo in Stanford's exhibit at the event.

Wildland Fires: Planetary and Public Health Solutions
Stanford Professor of Medicine and Pediatrics and Director of the Sean N. Parker Center for Allergy and Asthma Research Kari Nadeau moderated a Nov. 10 panel of experts, including Chris Field, Director of the Stanford Woods Institute for the Environment, discussing the planetary and public health risks of wildland fires. The session focused on solutions-facing topics with policy-oriented outcomes with a global perspective and emphasized low- and middle-income countries.
2022 GCP Carbon Budget, Scaling Solutions, and the Role of Agriculture
Stanford, Cornell, and Princeton co-hosted a Nov. 11 side event exploring the 2022 carbon budget from the Global Carbon Project. Arun Majumdar, the inaugural dean of the new Stanford Doerr School of Sustainability, presented a keynote on Stanford’s approach to accelerating the delivery of solutions at scale, followed by a panel discussion on “Climate and Agriculture: Challenges and Solutions."
How blue food communities can survive and thrive in the climate emergency
Blue, aquatic foods and the benefits they provide to billions of people around the world are threatened by climate change, especially in countries where significant sustainable development challenges persist. On Nov. 16 Stanford Center for Ocean Solutions Research Scientist Michelle Tigchelaar provided an overview of the various ways in which climate change threatens blue food systems and present the pillars of the blue prosperity framework.

Global Leadership on Blue Carbon: Keys to Success
Sponsored by Conservation International, IOC-UNESCO, IUCN, the Blue Carbon Initiative and the International Partnership for Blue Carbon. At this event highlighting blue carbon leadership and initiatives globally, Center for Ocean Solutions researcher Josheena Naggea shared about her work on blue carbon ecosystems, including the partnerships, leadership, and policy needed for implementing solutions. Landreth Visiting Scholar Felicia Marcus joined Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC) Director Daniel Taillant, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Michael Regan, the environment ministers of Canada and Mexico, and a Canadian First Nations representative to discuss climate adaptation and the CEC’s work.

Emerging Leaders in Ocean Policy and Science in SIDS

Scaling practical solutions to accelerate industrial decarbonization by 2030
This session communicated the action that is needed throughout integrated value chains in the next 1-3 years to meet the milestones outlined in the 2030 Industry Breakthroughs, holding leaders to account for the promises they made in Glasgow at COP26 and spotlighting industries that are making real economy progress on these promises. Rayne Sullivan, Climate AI Fellow at Stanford Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence (HAI), delivered closing remarks.

U.S. Leadership on Water Reuse Panel hosted by U.S. Chamber of Commerce/American Chamber Egypt
Landreth Visiting Scholar Felicia Marcus discussed the rise in water recycling - a key climate adaptation strategy -- in California and across the United States, covering the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency‘s Water Recycling Action Plan. Other panelists included the VP for Global Environmental Policy at PepsiCo, an SVP of Veolia, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce VP for Environment and Sustainability.

Bright Spots: Fostering Island-led Local Action into Global Coalitions - Spotlight on Climate Adaptation
This event highlighted many locally-led grassroots solutions being implemented in islands that contribute to climate adaptation benefits and showcased how they connect to biodiversity conservation through the application of nature-based solutions. Center for Ocean Solutions researcher Josheena Naggea shared how her home nation of Mauritius is supporting small-scale fisheries for long-term sustainability. Embrace sustainable water use and aquatic blue food diversity for climate-smart food systems
