Funding Opportunities

People

Named Professorship & Senior Fellows

An expected 60 strategic hires over the next 10 years will grow the school’s faculty to nearly 200, building on the university’s existing strengths and helping to define new fields for future generations.

Named Graduate Fellowships

Graduate education is central to Stanford’s mission of training future leaders and problem solvers. Funding graduate students is also one of the fastest ways to advance scientific discovery, often emerging from interactions between students and their faculty advisors. The need for graduate student support will increase to keep pace with the school’s expanding faculty.

Graduate Fellowship Funds

One of the dean’s most time-sensitive priorities is to address the current shortfall in graduate student aid resulting from recent changes in the federal funding landscape. Gifts to this fund are pooled to provide an immediately available core of support for PhD students.

Sustainability Postdoctoral Fellows

The Sustainability Postdoctoral Fellows Program attracts early-career talent from around the world to Stanford for postdoctoral research on a wide range of sustainability issues. The program’s holistic and innovative offerings empower fellows to broaden their knowledge, experience, and methodologies, including by pursuing new areas of expertise.

Faculty Start-Up Funds

These funds help them establish their laboratories, purchase necessary equipment, and pay research assistants while they apply for research grants. This is a critical form of support that enables our newly recruited faculty to begin pursuing their critical research missions immediately.

Programs

Career Center

To make a meaningful impact on the world, our students must gain real-world experience through internships in sustainability careers during their studies. Career placement services and resources are also highly desired by students, particularly as the job market for sustainability graduates evolves.

External Education & Mobilization

The school aims to become the preeminent provider of professional education on sustainability and a global force for societal change by informing and motivating individual and community behavior. Our External Education programs are designed to empower participants to make informed decisions about strategy, operations, policies, and lifestyles that affect global sustainability.

Discovery Grants

Discovery Grants prioritize the generation of fundamental, inquiry-based research across all topical areas within the school, aiming to advance our understanding of Earth, biological, societal, and engineered systems. They support research that does not easily qualify for other school-wide grant programs or is considered too risky for conventional funding sources.

Research for Solutions

Solution Areas enhance the school’s ability to translate Stanford research into large-scale solutions and to inform key decision-makers in policy and business. Selected based on where Stanford can make the most meaningful impact, the school’s eight Solution Areas are: climate; water; energy; food; risk, resilience, and adaptation; nature; cities; and platforms and tools for monitoring and decision making.

Sustainability Accelerator

The Sustainability Accelerator speeds the translation of Stanford research into scalable technology and policy solutions to address urgent global sustainability challenges. Considering scale from the outset, the Accelerator focuses investments and scaling support on Flagship Destinations—ambitious and measurable targets with the potential to substantially improve the quality of human life and our planet.

Sustainability Fund

Annual gifts to the Sustainability Fund help maximize discoveries and amplify the school’s impact. As a critical source of unrestricted dollars, the fund can be deployed by the dean to meet emerging challenges and seize new opportunities—year after year as the school grows.

Places

Sustainability Commons

The Sustainability Commons, comprising new buildings and a series of outdoor spaces on the west side of campus, will become the school’s new home. The Commons will welcome all of Stanford with an interest in sustainability, regardless of their academic focus, as well as partners outside academia working to drive policy and technology solutions to advance the long-term prosperity of the planet.

Hopkins Marine Station

As a leader in marine science since 1892, the station is home to 9 distinct laboratories that each address crucial scientific inquiries, from marine genomics and migrations to coastal ecosystems and blue food economies. Hopkins is undertaking a significant capital improvement project to renovate existing facility space and expand capacity to accommodate anticipated growth. Learn more>
